Why Spain?
A letter from Rachel
Dear supporter,
As a student at the University, it is imperative for me to continue its strong legacy while creating my own. I realize that I am studying at an institution at which influential, world-changing figures in the African American community have studied and begun their professional careers. I associate and network with student leaders who are destined for greatness and success.
With that being said, traveling to Spain has always been a goal of mine. I admire Spanish culture and heritage as well as its African roots and wish to learn and explore its history and opportunities. I chose Granada specifically because of its Phoenician, Greek, Punic, Roman, and Visigothic influences. I know I will be able to learn a plethora of things from its history and monocultural heritage as well as its historic sites, museums, etc.
In realizing this I have made it a point to make the most out of this opportunity. It’s crucial that I take advantage of such an opportunity in my undergraduate career so that as I age in my studies, I will be able to apply my newly found knowledge in all aspects of my education, leadership, and life. It will enable me to be socially conscious of a different background, society, community, and history. I will be able to gain a new type of perspective and become more relatable and sensitive to others from a different area of the world. An opportunity such as this will teach me to be adaptable and open to other people and our differences.
While studying abroad in Spain I will be doing exactly that – studying. My 15 credit course load includes Spanish grammar, writing skills, business Spanish, and Spanish civilization all taught in what will become my second language. I will also be traveling to Granada’s surrounding areas during excursions to Madrid, Toldedo, and Tetouan, Morrocco.
As a student, it is my job to contribute to the Howard community and the world. An experience like this will enhance my capabilities to make a significant difference in my life as well as others.
By donating, you are helping me turn this long time goal into an accomplishment.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rachel C. Hampton
